is the United States a democracy?
Nope.

The Constitution (a noun) of our Republic (also a noun) is a place where you can practice democracy (a verb). However, Democracy (spell check likes to incorrectly capitalize that silly word) in no way shape or form promises to protect the rights of individuals (true minority)… majority is the game of the day. 51 can vote to eat 49.

The American Republic acknowledges your right to play with democracy for a limited number of things… but it is not right to eat other people.

Democracy does not protect a Republic.

However a Republic does not prohibit democracy… thank goodness my Republic says i can (eventually) shoot you if you vote to eat me.

No, it is a Constitutional Republic. Refer to Civics 101, generally taught in or about the 8th grade.(pre "progressive" Infiltration of the public school system cira late 70ies)
