Rock-hopping at Nan Madol's front door. Of all Pohnpei's natural beauty and history, the ancient rock city ruins of Nan Madol on the island's east coast is the most popular tourist destination. The ruins, built entirely of balsaltic boulders, once played host to island kings who entered and exited the royal coastal city only during the peak of high tides. At all other times, the fortress was inaccessable from the water. Historians say Nan Madol's construction in 500 AD was customized to defend against warrior invaders from neighboring Micronesian islands.

ナンマドル遺跡の玄関口で「ロック跳び」。ポンペイの美しい自然と歴史を象徴した古代の「岩の都市」、ナンマドル遺跡。島の東側に位置するこの遺跡は観光で訪れた人々が必ずたちよるスポット。玄武岩で作られたこの古代都市はかつて島々を支配した王様たちを迎えいれた。ナンマドルへの船の出入りは満潮時にしかできない構造になっており、満潮以外の時は海からの進入が不可能である。歴史学者によると、ナンマドルは西暦５００年ごろ築かれ、その特殊な設計はポンペイの島人を侵略者から守りためと言われている。
