Het Maastricht Visitor Center is gevestigd in het Dinghuis, een gebouw met een lange geschiedenis.
De naam komt van het woord ‘dingen’, dat ‘rechtspreken’ betekent. Ook nu nog spreken we over een ‘geding’.
Het gebouw stamt uit het jaar 1470. In de Middeleeuwen waren er 2 gerechtshoven in het gebouw gevestigd:
het Brabantse en het Luikse. Maastricht werd namelijk deels bestuurd door de hertog van Brabant en deels
door de prins-bisschop van Luik. In 1664 verhuisden de gerechtshoven naar het nieuwe stadhuis op de Markt.
Zowel in het interieur als het exterieur van het voormalig stadhuis is die ‘Tweeherigheid’ tegenwoordig nog
goed te zien.


The Maastricht Visitor Center is located in the Dinghuis, a building with a long history. The name comes from the
word "things", which means "to judge." Even now we speak of a "lawsuit". The building dates from the year 1470.
In the Middle Ages there were 2 courts of justice in the building: the Brabant and the Liège. Maastricht was partly
ruled by the Duke of Brabant and partly by the Prince-Bishop of Liège. In 1664 the courts of justice moved to the
new town hall on the Markt. Today, both the interior and the exterior of the former town hall are still clearly
recognizable as this 'Twofoldness'.
