De Hoofdwacht werd in Maastricht gebouwd in 1736 door Hendrik Jacob Giehr. De Hoofdwacht is het gebouw
waar de belangrijkste mensen van binnen de stadswacht en het leger huisden. Zij hadden de verantwoordelijkheid
om de sleutels van de stadspoorten en andere vestigingen te bewaken. De stadswacht werd vanuit hier
uitgezonden naar de stadspoorten en het heeft dan ook een centrale ligging in de stad. Ook was er in de
Hoofdwacht een militaire delegatie aanwezig, met munitie en kanonnen, die moesten zorgen voor een snelle
respons bij naderend onheil. Voor de Hoofdwacht werd ook dagelijks wacht gehouden door de stadswacht.
En op het Vrijthof, direct aan de Hoofdwacht gelegen, werden militaire exercities gedaan waarbij de soldaten
geïnspecteerd werden. Ook werden hier lijfstraffen aan militairen uitgevoerd, omdat die werden opgelegd door
de stadscommandant. Voor deze lijfstraffen stond een strafpaard standaard naast de Hoofdwacht.
