When you break in an engine after a top overhaul it is necessary to use a straight mineral oil and not an oil with anti-wear additives. The reason is the all the moving parts need to rub against each other and smooth things out. The anti-wear additives prevent that from happening. Anyway, the first oil change is to be at ten hours. So I drained the oil, checked the big chunk screen and opened up the filter to have a look for metal particles. All was fine.
Over the years I have drained the oil from airplanes many times. I have made some blunders, particularly trying to fit six quarts of oil in a one gallon jug. Having learned my lesson, today I did it properly. The oil drains very slowly through that tube. So you get it started and forget about it until it is too late. Today I remained vigilant and disaster was avoided.
