Listen for the pathetic call of the juvenile rose breasted grosbeaks. Breaks my heart listening to them pleading for food. It seems as though there are more males feeding juveniles than females ... I'm not sure if they're like the Piping Plovers where the female leaves early and lets dad raise the young ones? The juvenile that is left behind has the colouration of the females but you can see a faint red on its breast. There's also a reddish hue under its wings. The juvenile females have a yellowish hue under their wings.

When we were here in the spring, most of the birds had paired off .. but there was a lone male grosbeak sitting at the top of the tallest tree calling for a mate. Listen carefully for these sounds in the spring .. it is pretty amazing!
