Unusual design
With its impressive height and distinctive futuristic style, it is hard to ignore this multicolored architectural wonder. Calypso accommodates 407 flats, spaces for offices and shops, 500 parking spaces and even a modern church: Pauluskerk! It was built from 2009 to 2012 by Alsop Architects, a British architectural firm known for their distinctive modern buildings with futuristic and fantastical styles. One of the firm’s signatures is to use bright colors and unusual shapes, which often ends up being the topic of hot discussion and debate by locals.The Calypso is centrally located at the intersection of Schouwburgplein and Mauritsweg. It is just a stone’s throw away from other inspiring pieces of modern architecture such as the Café De Unie, Rotterdamse Schouwburg, De Doelen and Rotterdam Central Station.
