The lighthouse is named after the captain of a military vessel. During the split of Belgium and the Netherlands in 1830, only 15 years after they had been reunited, the captain blew up his ship in Antwerp, rather than let it fall into the hands of the Belgians.
The building is a concrete tower, with a watchtower right below the lamp.
