In the west of the country you would find the "krukhuis" (doorhandle house) for farms. It consisted of a rectangular, simple farmhouse, with a small sidebuild at the front, the handle. Under the handle usually the cheese was kept. From the 17th century onward the soil was no longer good enough for growing corn, rye and the like. The farmers specialized in cheese, like Gouda and Leidse.
