The lens ranges I will quote are full frame equivalent as different brands have different crop factors. Before the ravages of chemo and surgery, I used to live in an RV. I would travel to small colleges and different communities. If they had no calendars or postcards, I would spend a week there in 4 different seasons and provide them with a supply of postcards and 11X14 photos. I do not call myself a pro. This was just to pay for my travels and camera gear. I changed to micro four thirds for my serious photography when I retired and started doing this instead or working in 2013. Micro four thirds mostly closely matches print format and is the same or higher resolution for prints as most of the APS-C cameras. I had 3 cameras and a vest so I could use all three without changing lenses. After chemo I had to sell my RV and photography equipment. I have my 3 lens recording memory setup and have been selling photos to buy a serious lens setup for the 2 serious cameras I bought used (EM1s since they paid my way and even with new cameras are still just as good as they always were and my money is going for lens first). My 4 lens setup with be, a 20-50/1.7, and 110/1.4, a 50/1.3 and a tele zoom. This lens was a demo and so I tested it how I will use it. By shooting it and then using my prime and walking in closer to frame the same shot. Of course as you call tell from the crop it is not near as sharp. But for an 11X14 print, it is sharp enough. While I will use it for birds and things, this is not the real reason for a tele. For photos I will take, the zoom lens are for composition. If you walk in and shot wide and then go far away and shot tele, the subject will be the same size. However the background will be very different. This difference is the difference between a nice shot and winning contests or selling photos. Inexperienced people use a zoom for framing the shot from where they are. As a film stock photographer I would use 3 primes and take the same shot from different distances. Now that zooms are so much better than then, I can take a dozen shots from different distances to get the best (to me) composition. And, this lens passed the test for now although I will get a 100-400/2.8-4 when this lens pays for it. This is a short discussion of 2 days of my protege course which I cannot teach this year.
