Rochester, NY

Midtown Plaza was America's first downtown mall. The mall was open from 1962-2008. I have many memories of going there as a chid, especially around Christmas time. There was a monorail that would take kids through Santa's mountain. There were several large department stores. One large store had a lunch counter I remember going to with my grandmother. The property now is a vacant lot.. There have been several ideas on redeveloping the site, including a performing arts center. Who knows if it will ever happen.

This photo evokes a sense of loss. A performing arts center sounds hopeful.

The dried grass in the foreground adds to the mood. Would be great to see this area revitalized.

Nice low angle. Not a shred of evidence that this was once a mall. V

Great documentary shot. Horton Plaza the downtown mall here has been closed for several years. The age of the mall is over! "V"

A scene that could be popping up everywhere with the state of economy due to covid19, Julie.V

some malls you might wish would go away, but others are part of the fabric of a generation or two...the low angle brings home the rubble of what must have offered items for some, and jobs for others..

So sad to think of what was once here and to see it now. V.

That's an interesting story, and an interesting image with nature taking back over. Malls all over the world are having an increasingly tough time, especially in America where there seemed to be one on every corner. Internet shopping has bitten into their lunch in a massive way. It's the same thing with department stores; all of our chains down here, be they up market, mid market or lower mid market are barely turning a profit, if they are at all. I can't think of any major malls that have closed down here of late, but as to what may happen in the future... Malls won't die but there will be far fewer of them, and the surviving ones will be the larger ones with other attractions like cinemas and decent quality eateries. When or if we get through COVID, anyway, sigh.
