A major piece of public art, the Neerim Bower roadside sculpture was created as the visual centerpiece of a multi-focus celebration of the visual arts.
The "inspired by birds" sculpture spans the road at the southern entrance to the small country town of Neerim South. The Bower, designed by the local artists, forms a seven story high sculptural gateway at the southern entrance to the town.
The artistry of the indigenous Satin Bower Bird in building and decorating his bower, to attract a mate with intertwined sticks decorated with blue ornaments such as clothes pegs, drinking straws and bottle tops are among favourite stolen items, was the inspiration for the three artists.
The significance of this sculpture is unsurpassed, due to the dedication of a group of residents who grasped an opportunity to transform Neerim South using Art. Neerim South was a through-town with passers by rarely stopping except to grab a few rations and petrol on their way. What was then, is now a thing of the past.
