Set of 4 photos of an assault course, on what was once the cricket square and in later years became the parade ground. The double story building is 41 and 42 messes. The wooden ‘shed’ type buildings on the left of the photo were used as the RC and Free Church Chapels before these were moved to what was the old swimming pool on the lower playing fields in 1937. The single story wooden building to the right in 3 of the photos was 40 mess at the top of the Short Covered Way. You can also see the anchor buts for the mast shrouds. It is not known what the course runs were constructed for but the best guess is that it was a special event or competition. Note that those on the course are Senior Rates and Officers whilst the Boys are watching from the mess windows. The closest we can get for the date is post 1907 when the mast was erected and pre 1928 when the Chiefs and PO’s messes were built.
