Gala Day

view map

This sculpture in Elba Park depicts 4 local colliery banners, St Michaels, Dubmire, Burnside and Shiney Row.
Each Colliery had it's own banner which would be paraded through Durham at the annual miners gala.
The gala still carries on today even though all the collieries are now closed, it's part political rally and part p*ss up for the boys (and girls).

Good to see that some history isn't being consigned to the scrapheap

touching that the miners are saluted and not forgotten...the gala sounds like a worthwhile bit of fun...good too that you caught the scene under the ashen sky..
