The battles rage on in America, not only against the deadly Covid-19, but also against stay-at-home orders and face masks. In the absence of a unified, comprehensive, science-based, top down strategy states and local communities are struggling to find their own way through the greatest threat to public health in 100 years. Despite the rhetoric printed on cheap, red ball caps, America has not been made great again; unless you count the fact that we lead the planet in the number of Covid-19 infections and deaths as greatness- I certainly don't. Rugged individualism built this nation, but in past crises and wars we have managed to somehow put aside our differences to fight against and vanquish a common threat to our existence with a unified resolve. But not so this time. Past administrations have united us in the battles, but not so this time. Make no mistake, in time we will overcome this threat, but in my opinion history will not record our struggle against Covid-19 as one of our finest hours. A notable exception, however, is the dedication and sacrifices made every day by the healthcare professionals on the front line of this battle. They continue to wage war on our behalf while the political and civil turmoils swirl around them. In true American fashion heroes always come through for us- God bless them.
