North American (NGC7000) and Pelican (IC5070) Nebulae

Ashton-Wildwood Observatory

Exposure was 15 minutes.

Obviously the nebula has an uncanny shape similar to the continent of North America. Info on this nebula places it about 2200 light years away with a diameter of about 50 LY. This area of sky is full of stars as it is looking along the plane of the Milky Way Galaxy.

The brilliant blue star in the upper right corner is Deneb (Alpha Cygni) and along with Vega and Altair forms the summer triangle.

It was very difficult to take these type of images, especially in color as the film has to be cut into individual frames, loaded in the film holders and after the film is removed it has to be placed into a device to process the film, which I did with tiny hangers and clips, and then run it through a 9 step process, shot on Kodak Ektachrome slide film.
