Washita County, Oklahoma

This is near Retrop which is just a few miles West of where I live.
This was once a solid line of trees that ran for miles having been planted by The Federal Government during the Dust Bowl.
They were planted to stop the soil from all blowing away.
This was called the Shelterbelt Project and went on from 1933 to 1942.
Millions of trees were planted in the Texas Panhandle, Western Oklahoma, Central Kansas, and the eastern halves of Nebraska and the Dakota's.

I really like your narrative and how it adds to this timeless and moody image. This image has a foreboding almost dreamlike like feel that is both dramatic and haunting. Very nicely done Jeff. VVV

Nice black and white image for the past with a bit of history of the tree planting back then.
Nicely placed into the great frame.

This definitely looks like it was taken at the height of the dust bowl era when dark clouds of wind carried dust filled the skies. Superb technique getting this look. ~BV~

We live and learn (or not)... perhaps the trees weren't the right variety for the ecosystem, or should have been planted in clumps... interesting info!
globalgadabout10-May-2020 17:12
the trees seem thinned out since then, and these ones sport dead branches...perhaps you have drought there too...good rich tone here..

It has a strong feeling of Depression times. "VV"
We still have abundant examples of the shelter belt even ln my residential neighborhood.

Such a great mood here, quite appropriate for the line of trees that are no more. V.
