British, French and Americans all had the same design and colors to identify the nationality of their aircraft. The outer circle of the British was blue and the center was red. The French outer circle was red with the center blue. When the Americans entered the war they wanted to identify as an ally so they used the same roundel with the colors as shown. Thus, the aircraft could first be identified as Allied and then by nationality.
