The square of San Firenze is located in the historical center of Florence, behind Palazzo Vecchio and close to Borgello. It owes it’s name to a building dedicated to St.Fiorenzo, which stood where now stands the monumental baroque complex of St.Filippo Neri. Until recently these buildings were used as a venue of the Court and judicial officies. In 2013 it was occupied by the administration of Italian prime minister, Matteo Renzi. Palazzo Gondi is situated in front of it. This palace is a perfect example of residential architecture in Florence in 15th century, designed by Giuliano da San Gallo and expanded in 19th century. In ancient times there were two churches on the square: the church of St. Apollinare, founded perhaps by the Byzantines, and the church of St. Fiorenzo. The first was located just below the current chapel of St. Filippo Neri, the other one was completely destroyed. On the corner with via dei Greci there are the ruins of the Temple of Isis (II century A.D.)
