'Tablecloth,’ Sisithunwan Dakhota artist, 1900-1910

By 1863 most Dakhota were banished from their homeland and exiled to states bordering Minnesota. Yet Dakhota women artists continued to create, often a means of supporting their families as more non-Natives discovered the beauty of their art. This tablecloth’s design encompasses the delicate symmetry and floral motifs often found in pre-1863 Dakhota work, yet the artist also chose to work with materials associated with Victorian households.

*****

From the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery website:

“Women have long been the creative force behind Native American art, yet their individual contributions have been largely unrecognized, instead treated as anonymous representations of entire cultures. ‘Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists’ explores the artistic achievements of Native women and establishes their rightful place in the art world.”

Best to view in "Original" because other versions resized by Pbase are decidedly unsharp.
