LOCOMOTION NO. 1 1825

Head of Steam Railway Museum, Station Road, Darlington







Locomotion No.1 was built in by George Stephenson for the worlds first public railway, the Stockton and Darlington Railway.
It was responsible for hauling the first train on the line on the 27th September 1825.
It spent many years on display at Darlington Bank Top Railway Station before finally being put on display in the museum.

This locomotive was built by Robert Stephenson & Co at Fourth Street Works, Newcastle-On-Tyne.
On the 27th September 1825 it was driven by George Stephenson & hauled a train of 90 Tons from Shildon to Stockton a distance of 18 miles.
It continued in use on this line until 1841.
