The bridge was opened in 1782, has been modified many times and was completely refurbished in 2008.
It is now a crossing over the River Adur for walkers and cyclists whereas originally it was for horses and carts as well - see below!
Today, on the eastern side, stands the memorial for those who died in the 2015 Shoreham air crash.

For every Score of Calves, Hogs, Sheep or Lambs, Tenpence; and so in Proportion for any less Number:
And for every Foot Passenger, One Halfpenny
