Piccadilly, Mayfair, London view map

We are certainly in Mayfair now, though still travelling west along Piccadilly. The building that you see before you is the Cavalry and Guards Club at 127 Piccadilly.

It was originally just the Cavalry Club which was founded here in 1890. The Guards' Club had been founded in 1810 in Pall Mall, but the two merged in 1976. In 1987 the club bought the land so that it could not be evicted as its then landlord had planned to do once the lease had expired.

It seems to be a very traditional British club. There is nothing on the website about how to apply for membership, but I rather suspect that as the name suggests it is limited to those who were in the cavalry and/or part of the Queen's guards. There are some honorary members, but to get on that list you are pushing your luck if you had a rank any lower than Colonel, and in fact even Lieutenant General is a bit iffy. Oh wait, one Major General did make an in as an honorary member, but for the most part it seems that Field Marshals are preferred. Note that I'm not begrudging them this; I'm not of the mindset that restricting membership to a private club is some form of "ism" that one must express outrage on Twitter about.

The internal layout of the club seems to be very classical, and very beautiful. There is even a club barber on site, and members can apply for guest accommodation.

The Google search that comes up describes it as "an elegant gentleman's club that regularly hosted King Edward VIII when he was Prince of Wales". I would probably see if I could get Google to change that, if I were the club given that in my view at least Edward VIII was one of life's great losers. Though I'm sure that there are many people who would have happily changed places with him since after his abdication at the age of 42 he was paid quite handsomely for not doing much. I'm sure that the club has had far more inspirational members that could be used to personify it.
