M42a_redo.jpg

Running man on the left, and Orion on the right. These are the two primary nebula in this photo, with De Mairan's Nebula in the center.
Orion nebula (M42), De Mairan's Nebula (M43) and running man nebula (NGC 1977)

The Orion Nebula is an enormous cloud of interstellar gas and dust, one of many in the Milky Way galaxy.
It lies roughly 1,300 light-years from Earth and can be found in the Orion constellation.
It is large nearly 24 light years across, over 2 times the apparent size of the moon.
If you find the three medium-bright stars in a short line that represent Orion’s Belt, look closely under that and you’ll notice a shorter line of stars “hanging” from the three Belt stars.
These stars represent Orion’s Sword. Look for the Orion Nebula about midway down in the Sword.
