Brig. Stockkalper Palace

Kaspar von Stockalper (1609–91), a shrewd businessman who dominated the Simplon Pass trade routes, built this whimsical palace and dubbed himself the ‘Great Stockalper’. Locals didn’t like his bloated ego and sent him packing to Italy. Wander for free the main court and beautiful baroque gardens with quintessential parterres, fountains and clipped hedges. His impressive palace in Brig is a testimony to his wealth and worldly power. The building is the biggest private building of the 17th century in Switzerland. Visit this representative castle and learn about the symbolism and the history of that place. The adjoining gardens as well as the exhibition "Passage Simplon" are worth a visit too.

Great image with the man on the cell phone. Sounds like Kaspar would have been the first to own one if they existed back then. :-)
