Gregor Matyas was troubled by the present passage in his life. Scarcely a year had passed since he had decided
to retire from his position of professor of philosophy at a small but prestigious liberal arts college in New England.
His friends had been surprised at his decision; he was in good health and had remained very active
in both his research and lecturing activities. Moreover, there seemed to be no external reasons
for his decision. He was a popular lecturer with his students and a valuable collaborator of his colleagues.
