The Wreck of the Nana Provider

Last night a tug pulling this barge came too close to the shore of
Quadra Island and the barge got hung up on rocks. The tug was not damaged
and the seven crew members are okay. Divers and inspectors were examining
the barge this morning. It appears nothing bad was released into the ocean.
As you can see, the barge is sitting at a bit of an angle.

We live about two kilometers up the coast from this location. We were
at a concert last night when the grounding occurred but our neighbor
said there was a huge noise for about 40 seconds when the barge hit.

According to local news reports the operator is going to attempt to
refloat the Nana Provider at high tide this afternoon. Let's hope so.
Those Alaskan Nanas need their provisions.

Update: The attempt to refloat failed. Damage has been found on the hull.
Who knows how long it will take to deal with this problem. November is
usually the worst month for storms on Quadra, so this could be bad.

November 15 Update: After several failed attempts the barge has finally
been refloated and towed to a repair facility just north of Campbell River.
Luckily there was no release of pollutants and no environmental damage.

Excellent capture of this stranded barge, and an interesting narrative to accompany it. I had no idea barges could be so large! V.

Good documentary shot. I hope you take one at high tide if/when he floats undamaged.

Interesting documentary shot. You can see the list quite clearly. Hope she comes off the ground at high tide.

with luck a temporary feature of the Quadra coast.., you wouldn't want such a hulk to sit and fester..

That looks really big. Great shot of it on this overcast day that makes the green color really pop. ~BV~
