Greetings from several North Yorkshire coastal towns! We had to make the most of yesterday’s forecast - sun & clouds.
First stop: Ravenscar. Breathtaking views of the North Sea and countryside.
Next stop: Staithes! A charming, traditional fishing village on the North Yorkshire Coast. Once one of the busiest fishing ports on the North
East coast, Staithes boasts a long proud history as the one-time home of famous Royal Navy captain and explorer, Captain James Cook. We had one of the best fish & chips at the Cod & Lobster pub across the “road” from Captain Cook’s cottage!
Next stop: Whitby Abbey! Whitby Abbey was a 7th-century Christian monastery that later became a Benedictine abbey. The abbey church overlooks the North Sea on the East Cliff above Whitby, a centre of the medieval Northumbrian kingdom. Bram Stoker found some of his inspiration for 'Dracula' after staying in Whitby in 1890. He stayed in a house on the West Cliff and
was trying to decide whether it would be suitable for a family holiday. ... These notes contain the only reference to Dracula, the historical figure, in all of Stoker's papers. After dodging light rain and lots of mud at the Abbey, we made our way down to town and found a charming gin & beer bar across the street from Mademoiselle’s restaurant where we had a lovely dinner.
We anticipate heavy rains today (1-2”) in North Yorkshire. 😫. We will head to a market in Pickering and then pay a visit to a WWII museum, Eden Camp.
