One exciting aspect of visiting the neotropics is that there are several families of birds that we just don’t get here in the United States. One of my favorites is the antbirds so it was exciting to wake up to the distinct calls of the Dusky Antbird one morning during our stay in Tarcoles, Costa Rica earlier this month. After getting ready as quickly as possible we made it out of our rooms in time to catch this little beauty hopping around the dark understory behind our cabins. Talk about a photographic challenge, an almost black bird ceaselessly zipping around in the shadows of the jungle. When this image popped up on the back of my camera it almost felt like a miracle had happened.
