Top:In full afterburner, the Lightning II is making a high speed pass just below the speed of sound. There are actually two cones; a small one just aft of the air intakes; and the large one just ahead of the tailplanes.

Bottom: Out of afterburner, the F-35 is beginning to slow; and the transonic vapour cone is beginning to dissipate.
