Day 3 August 26
It was definitely an Elvis Presley day for us. We started out at Graceland. There is a lot to see in the museum. There are also lots of gift shops. I would bet there are a dozen of them. The museum was interesting. I liked his car collection. There was lots of memorabilia on display from other artists as well. His airplanes were on display as well. His big one was a Convair 880. The smaller one was a Jet Star.
Touring the mansion was nice. It is well preserved just like it was when he lived there. They had a iPad and ear phones rig that you used as you went through the house. It was a little hard to get used to, but once I figured out how it worked, it was fine.
It was interesting that there were very few people there. It was a Monday and the kids are all back in school, so I guess it was just us retired folks out there. All in all, it was a good visit. We ended up snacking in the car at lunch time. Often just some crackers, cheese, peanut butter and fruit is all we need. Also, we have a cooler full of ice cold water bottles.
In the afternoon we headed to downtown and visited the Sun Recording Studios. It was a well done tour of a small place. Sun was where Elvis recorded his first song directly to a record for a birthday present for his mom. That was 1953, the year he graduated high school. Finally after about a year he cut a recording of That's All Right Mama which launched his career. I didn't realize it, but a lot of famous singers went through Sun.
Today's photo is of Ginny making her breakout recording with the same microphone that Elvis used to record his breakout recording 55 years ago.
