Spinning Wilson’s Phalaropes always put a smile on my face; there’s just something amusing about seeing a tiny bird spinning around and around in circles plucking tiny things from the surface of the water. Better still is seeing multiple phalaropes feeding together. This past week there have been as many as 36 Wilson’s Phalaropes foraging in Olney Pond at Brazoria NWR along with a variety of other migrating shorebirds providing hours of entertainment. It has been interesting watching the progression of birds feeding in the various ponds at the refuge over the past couple of weeks. As the water levels get lower and lower the mix of birds changes and I have to say I am thrilled to have been able to make it out for the phalaropes.
