C’est le dernier jour de notre séjour à Kyoto. Le matin nous avons visité l’admirable temple de Sanjusangendo et son millier de magnifiques bouddhas en bois qu’il est malheureusement interdit de photographier. Nous sommes revenus vers Gion pour déjeuner. Soudain, en début d’après-midi, alors que nous quittons le restaurant, une foule immense envahit les trottoirs de la grande avenue centrale shijo-dori Nous apprenons que des acteurs de kabuki vont défiler dans l’avenue à la veille d’entamer une nouvelle saison au théâtre national de Kyoto. Au Japon les acteurs de Kabuki sont de véritables idoles. A Gion, ils ont même attiré aux fenêtres Geishas et Maikos.
A la vue de ces visages poudrés de blanc, intemporels, qui surgissent de l’ombre j’ai l’impression que c’est le Japon Éternel qui s’avançe à la fenêtre au-dessus du tumulte de la rue…

Window of the Past.
This is the last day of our stay in Kyoto. In the morning we visited the wonderful temple of Sanjusangendo and its thousand magnificent wooden Buddhas which it is unfortunately forbidden to photograph. We came back to Gion for lunch. Suddenly, in the early afternoon, as we leave the restaurant, a huge crowd invades the sidewalks of the great central avenue shijo-dori.
We learn that Kabuki actors will march down the avenue on the eve of a new season at the Kyoto National Theatre. In Japan the actors of Kabuki are true idols. In Gion, they even attracted to the windows Geishas and Maikos.
At the sight of these white, timeless, powdery faces that arise out of the shadows, I have the impression that it is the Eternal Japan that advances to the window above the tumult of the street…
