Next month 11th July 2018 will be 51 years to the day that I came to attention on that Button despite the horrendous wind that almost put paid to the display going ahead let alone the Button boy standing up, but that’s another story. That day back in 1968 was the day after my Dad’s 42nd Birthday and he and my Mum were both there watching me my Mum terrified and Dad beaming with pride. The thing about being a boy at Ganges, when it came to something like climbing that Monster or being part of the Window Ladder Display Team or any other activity that involved some sort of danger, we never really saw it as dangerous, neither I feel did the Instructors, it was just part of what we did. Now I look back and think how fantastic it was to be unaware of over bearing Health and Safety, Political Correctness and all the shit that comes with it all, it’s just so sad to witness what might be the end of a such an iconic symbol that was part of some treasured times.
