July: 112 Degrees in the Shade

Contently Yawning; Not Panting

Shot midday in glaring sun; so IQ isn't the best.

Today, Bella decided to sunbathe by laying on hot concrete in the brutal full sun.
Crazy, crazy, crazy.

All of our dogs had safely been in air-conditioning inside the house. However when I went out to water some plants, Bella ran out the door to deliberately lay down on the hot patio. There was a little bit of shade outdoors in another area, but she wasn't interested. She wanted to be in the full sun & was loving it. In the above photo, she's yawning: not panting.

Suffering from the heat myself, I managed to shoot a couple of quick photos of her. I had to then carry her back inside because she stubbornly wouldn't leave her sunbathing spot. She obviously REALLY wanted to take a siesta outdoors; while soaking up the rays.

Although the extreme heat didn't seem to bother Bella at the time when I shot this photo, I know that extreme heat can quickly become very dangerous - if not deadly - within a very short period of time. Temps above 110 absolutely are not something to mess with. Not even for a crazy Chihuahua.

My rule of thumb is that if it's too hot or cold for me, it's too hot or cold for the dogs to be outdoors.

BTW, to test if the patio pavement is hot enough to hurt tiny Chihuahua paws, I will first test it with my own bare foot (or hand)before allowing them on it in full sun with extreme heat.

The current EXTREME HEAT WARNING here is supposed to last until Monday; which will make 6 straight days of high temperatures with heat indexes above 100 degrees (and up to 115) and actual low tempts around 80 degrees or even higher.

Bella is clearly her own dog and this is a fine photograph!

Yikes, Bella does look hot! Sahraa insists on staying out in the heat under "normal" hot circumstances, but yesterday, when it reached 95 (with the heat index over 100), I made her come in. Unfortunately, it will be the same today and tomorrow.
