5-29-2019 Female Rufous Hummingbird - underside :)

We visited friends near Leavenworth Washington (on the east side of the
Cascade Mountains} this past week. They had several hummingbird feeders
out, so I couldn't resist getting out my 500mm f4L and 2Xiii extender.

Thanks for your very kind words Michael! They are challenging subjects. In this instance I had an unusual
situation. Several feeders and a deck where I could set up a tripod and a 1,000mm lens combination. However it did take hours and several hundred attempts to get a few successful results. I’ll be sharing a few of them
over the next few days. Thanks again Michael.

Incredible timing and exposure. Getting images of these guys is SO BLOOMING DIFFICULT because of their biology and the physics of exposure, and for the average shooter who has never attempted it, this appears beautiful but achievable. I can say unequivocally this is nowhere near as easy as it looks. This is on the same order of difficulty as catching an image of an NFL receiver at the apex of his leap to catch a pass...including the unpredictability of the position of a defender. In other words, don’t think this is simply another bird shot: it is not.
