I was chewing coca leaves. We had stopped to take in the view of Cusco, and also get instruction on the use of coca leaves. These are chewed regularly by the locals in order to counter the effects of the altitude, and to prevent altitude sickness. We were encouraged to use the coca leaves regularly.
