Terraces served two different purposes at Machu Picchu. One was to provide a good foundation for the structures by providing good drainage for water from the rains. (Machu Picchu gets a lot of rain.) The other was for agriculture. The terraces are still intact after all these years! They are responsible for the ruins surviving this long.
