Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes

These were not the tourist ready hold a snakes. These were the kill Jeff variety!
I ws told by the experts that there strike range was about two and a half feet so I shot them from about four feet above at 100mm.
There were about 150 snakes and the rattling was loud and rattled my nerves! I made about thirty fives frames looking for the right composition and then I remembered to breathe!
A couple of days later a local family had five puppies bitten by a single snake.
Happily myself and the puppies are all alive!

Wow! What a photo. The pattern in monochrome is awesome. Love your composition. You were very brave to get this shot. I don't know if I would have gone for it with only 18" to spare.

I prefer to avoid this species when hiking but what a spectacular composition presented perfectly in black and white. The patterns really sand out as well as the textures of their scales. A fantastic nerve rattling capture my friend. VVV

Nice monochrome patterns all coiled together. I'm fascinated by snakes--but they must be at least 180mm focal length away. =V=

The stuff that dreams are made of! Terrific composition from safely above - it must have been a challenge to compose with all those snakes, not to mention your nerves. Glad you came away with some nice material and also glad to hear those puppies are all okay.
Nick Paoni04-May-2019 13:54
High contrast black and white was the perfect choice for this menacing, yet beautiful predator. Glad all are safe after the experience.

They are beautiful creatures and your fantastic shot does them full justice. Always good to be wary around rattlers, though they only bite when disturbed (as with the puppies!). V
