Renewal

Burning off almond trees that have passed their peak production years.
They will replace the old trees with new trees or
crop that field and put trees in the field in the foreground!
Water use in California just moves sideways.
The Central Valley is all large scale industry including the farming!
The air pollution problem is ongoing!

luckily the fire staid in the almond fields!

Burning after the harvest is common here and farmers also burn unwanted vegetation on the hills/mountains - sometimes with disastrous consequences.
A nice piece of reportage.

Something I never knew! Fascinating picture and commentary.

Smoke from burning crops is often a problem here in s. Texas too. Interesting that they burn old almond trees. I never really thought about the life span of an almond tree, or it's age span for producing quality nuts.

Interesting comments so far. Actually agriculture uses more water in California than people!

Our indigenous people believe the earth needs fire just as it need water...they've been here 50,000 years longer than I and will not argue. :) It's an interesting series of fire.

A constant state of crisis as far as water is concerned, and yes, the almond trees are very, very thirsty, not a good scenario. An interesting shot, however. V

That doesn't sound like a great situation.

just as well...they consume a huge amount of water in a state that can ill afford it..
