Something else which is unique about the island- the houses are numbered in the order they were built- so each house has an individual number, combined with a street name. The colourful houses in front are the so called lobster shacks, which used to be stores and work spaces for fishermen, nowadays they have been converted into shops and showrooms catering to tourists. The huge thing above is the communications transmitter for the entire German Bight. To the right is the old navy semaphore and the lighthouse. The buildings half way up are the hospital and the retirement home. In short, this place has everything you would find in a small town- most often smaller and sometimes in the most unexpected of places, but still available. There is one exception though: Students who wish to go to college have to attend senior highschool, which doesn't exist here, so they transfer to a boarding school on the mainland
