After Dark

One of the saddest events in my life. We were there, our home town was burning, one life was lost and friends and family had their homes burn in minutes. I have photos but have never posted them, too sad.

This was how the moon looked on that awful night

The 2009 Victorian bushfires also called Black Saturday, where more than 400 bushfires started in Victoria, Australia on February 7, 2009. The fires caused Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire. 173 people died, and 440 people were taken to hospitals with bad burns.

Fire is a terrifying thing. I like what John Vass said about being spared by a small change in the wind. We like to think we are powerful, when we are at the mercy of the weather, fools and fate. V

I always will remember these horrific bush fires. The scars they left in people and in the landscape...

Such a dreadful occurrence. So very sorry! The red moon in the distance makes me think it, too is mourning.

Very tragic and the red moon in all the negative black space says it all. Emotive image. V.

A horrific time, to be sure. The moon looks sad too.

Hard to even image what a life changing experience that would be like! Long ago I was working a a ranch that had a fast moving fire heading our way. We moved animals and as much as we could in the short time we had. We were spared by a small thing, a shift in the wind, it was very tense. So this… this is the nightmare you hope never happens. It did for you and your’s and that is very sad. It is hard to recover but I hope that there have been good things going forward. You never fully recover, the scar just heals over and you move on! I hope that is the case for you!

I was in Australia and Victoria in 2009 when that all occurred. Luckily, I only watched the tragedy unfold on the news. I can only begin to image the trauma that you and your community experienced. It is definitely something that can never be forgotten. Until now, I never linked that dreadful day with it happening in your home town. Yes, the moon does turn blood red from heavy smoke in the air. I have seen that several times myself. I also agree with you (and can understand why) about not posting the other photos that you have from Black Saturday. This fiery moon is a very dramatic image.

That was definitely a dark time for your community and country. A nice memorial for those affected by that tragedy.
