Arlo

He had few social cues, and just stumbled about. The poor guy was blind. So the rescue the traveler's dumped him on kept him in with the puppies and smaller dogs. But he was still stumbling about, trying to figure out where everything was, and where he was. My wife was in with the puppies, giving them some love, when she saw this poor creature slowly hobble towards her from out of a dark corner. He was tiny, the size and shape of maybe a 3 month old Greyhound - maybe 8lbs. The puppies, who were still larger than Arlo, kept bumping against him, making it difficult for him to keep his footing as he tried to find some water to drink. We both took such pity on him, and I teared up a bit. We brought him home that night. On the way home, driving through Kilkenny, we stopped by McDOnalds and I got him a hamburger. He couldn't believe it. This is one of my first photos of him. If you look closely, you'll see he has no whiskers or eyelashes.

So this is how we got him. He was so helpless and needed us so much. We were lucky to find each other. We loved him every day. We looked after him as best we could and with as much love as we could muster. We know he loved us, too. When you look after a helpless creature for so long, the loss when they leave is just all consuming. We never realised how much he meant to us.
