Our first day on the road started out cloudy and rainy, not what we had expected in New Zealand in late November. We drove from Christchurch over Arthur's Pass and then on to Punakaiki on the west coast.
We had heard that the east coast is typically the dry, sunny side of the island, while the west coast tends to be wetter and windier. We experienced exactly the opposite most of the time we were there.
