This paddle started from the Wekiva Falls RV Resort in Sorrento, Florida and went south on the Wekiva River to the Little Wekiva. The start temperature warmed up quickly to a point where we were shedding the warmer clothing that we started with. The sky was cloudless and the water, although having a current was flat. Great day for a paddle.
We saw no gators on the way out. Too cold for them. Very few turtles also. Again, too cold. Coming back we did see one gator about 6 feet long. We also saw many birds and turtles.
The condition of the rivers and streams in Florida has been largely ignored for many years and as a result, the river is choked off in many places with weeds so thick that it was necessary to pole through the weeds. Fallen trees have also not been cleared. This was especially true on the Little Wekiva. As a matter of fact, our paddle came to an abrupt end when the river was impassible because of fallen trees and weeds.
It was still a great paddle and conversation.
