Pine grosbeak

Dominion Arboretum

Where I live, this northern finch can be absent for some years at a time. But when the cone crop fails up north, as it does every so often, these and other winter finches head south to find food. We've been seeing these birds for a couple of months now, in various parts of the city and Ottawa Valley, and they are also being seen much further south.

We had many of these in our yard about 5 winters ago, that's the one and only time I have seen them in 23 years of living here. A fine shot, Christine.

Sounds a bit like our waxwings in Britain. If they're aren't enough berries in Scandinavia, they come here, especially to the north-eastern areas. Rarely see them here in the south east, but have learnt there are a handful in Hampshire at the moment.
