Most Bhutanese monks come from poor families. They receive a free education while studying the religious and spiritual path under the guidance of elderly monks. Boys as young as 5 join attend the monastery where they learn to read English and Sanskrit. They also perform rituals and learn musical instruments. It is a long day, their routine usually starts at 4am and finishes at 10pm.
