Built in the mid-16th century, the Dzong, or fortress, is the largest in the country. It sits high above the Mangde Chhu (river) and is in the corridor connecting eastern and western Bhutan. It was the de facto capital for centuries. The Wangchuk dynasty founded this Dzong; the King of Bhutan is a descendant.
