Honey Bee Hotel

Heritage lake

I had no idea what this was until I posted a photo of it on facebook and learned it was a mason bee hive. It was built as a eagle scout project at a nearby county park in a pollinating field. Who Knew! Mason bees don’t produce honey but do a serious job of pollination.

I come across carpenter bee nest often and when I do I alway make sure my customer knows about them just as much as when I find termites or army ants in their homes.

What you’d seeing is hollow bamboo rods and as you noted 4x4 blocks of wood that was drilled out by the installer, not the bee so the bee has a home. I know this was a Eagle Scout project because they mounted a place on the side stating that. Now that I know what it is I’m going to observe it closer and more often since it’s about a 5 minute drive from my home and is right off the walking trail around the lake.

Well, I learned a bit more after seeing this very nice photo along with the description. I like photographing bees; but I don't know alot about them. After looking up Mason bees on Wikipedia, I also found https://thehoneybeeconservancy.org/why-bees/mason-bees/

These are not Carpenter bees, but the holes in the blocks look like they could have made by one. I put a shot of a carpenter bee in pending.
