Bill Mitchell's "Great White"
Bill Mitchell, head of Design at General Motors from 1959 - 1977, was considered
by many to be a design genius, and had a passion for drawing and driving fast cars.
He was responsible for the styling of the 1959 Cadillac, 1963 Riveria, 1966 Oldsmobile
Toronado, and Cadillac Seville, but his greatest legacy was the design of the 1963 Corvette.
Mitchell was also a strong believer in building "dream" or "concept cars". He established the
GM Advance Design Center, allowing his designers a great deal of creative freedom in their work.
This highly customized 1976 Corvette, dubbed "The Great White", is a one of a kind, high-
performance styling excercise built expressly for Mitchell. The car features an all-aluminum 454
Z-1 block and L-88 drive train, and was sold by GM to Mitchell after his retirement.
454 cu inch Aluminum V-8, 500+ horsepower, 98-inch wheelbase,
